Day 10: The Day I Tap Out

Unfortunately on my ride earlier today, I developed a persisting numbness in my left hand and radiating pain up my arm.  I’m not a medical professional, but I am married to one.  I knew to stop the ride and Jean agrees.

Here is today’s screenshot after stopping in Williams, AZ:

So here is the tally for 10 days of riding (with 1 day off): 536.3 miles, 25,154 feet of elevation, and the conquering of the Mojave.

Now back home to fix the body.

Photos from Day 9

In the area of Seligman, AZ, I came across sets of retro looking but new Burma-Shave signs.  After doing a bit of googling, I found out the town installed the signs to connect with the time of the original Route 66.  Here is the one of the final signs:

If you don’t recognize the name, go to Wikipedia.

I didn’t have a sticker to add to this sign:

I saw the remains of an old timey culvert along with power poles that must predate Route 66:

I met a fellow traveler this morning.  Nick (in the foreground) is riding westbound, heading for Los Angeles:

Day 9

Started with my coolest morning yet; I ultimately needed 3 top layers due to the wind; by late morning, I was back down to my single riding top.  I finished in Ash Fork, AZ, earlier this afternoon.

Flagstaff is tomorrow’s destination.

One of the many roadside shops that you see along the ride:

A friendly cat at another roadside shop:

A sign I don’t normally see:

Here I am all suited up for the road; have I ever told you that the sun and I don’t get along?

Day 8

Left Kingman and ended the day 10 miles east of of Peach Springs

Coolest day of my trip to date; needed to wear my coat all day due to the wind and the overcast.

My elevation at day’s end is about 5,300 feet.

Day 7: Another Day of 2 Parts

Starting in Needles, I had lunch in Oatman (Part 1):

and finished in Kingman (Part 2):

Totaling 69.9 miles

Day 7 Photos

This morning in Needles, here is a mural of a part of Route 66, with towns I have mentioned, and others I have not:

I left California for Arizona by crossing the Colorado:

After leaving Oatman, I made it up to the top of Sitgreaves Pass; below is a view as I made my way down:

Day 6: a Day of Rest

After yesterday’s ride, I took the day off and holed up in a Needles hotel room to avoid the heat.

Last night I hand washed my riding clothes, but the socks seem to stink worse.  Today I rehydrated, ate a lot (this is not a weight reduction plan), and watched some Adam-12 episodes.

In the morning I leave California on the way to Kingman, AZ.

Day 5: the Big Push in 2 Parts

After an early start today from Ludlow, I ended the day in Needles, CA, for a total of 106.9 miles.

Here is this morning’s sunrise:

At 6:30 AM, I came upon the famous Roy’s in Amboy, CA:

I had to walk the bike around 11 separate bridges that were either destroyed or damaged due to recent floods; here is one that was completely wiped out:

Part 1 was from Ludlow to Fenner:

After some liquids, food, and a bit of a rest, I rode onto Needles:

I’ll be taking the day off tomorrow.

Day 4

A relatively easy ride today, with a modest elevation change, finishing in the small town of Ludlow, CA.

Getting my mind right for a big push tomorrow.

Along the Road Today

A view of the ride ahead of me, at about 11 this morning.

Day 3

I wanted to finish the day beyond Barstow, but had to take a round about detour around a fire, screwing up my mojo, so I stopped for the night in Barstow.

Seeking any shade for a rest stop today

Not a fan of the normal tourist photos.

People of a certain age will recognize the name of the park if you zoom in on the sign.

Day 1

Started from the airport hotel and rode approx 10 miles to the traditional start point of the Santa Monica pier.

The day started cold and then heated up.  Feeling good and looking forward to tomorrow.

Saw this during my ride earlier today:

Day 0 of My Cross Country Trek

Arrived in LA this morning and rode my bike from Union Station to a hotel near the airport while Jean took a cab with all my gear.

Here is a summary of today’s warm up ride:
